Post Spitfire Saga: Catch 22.
My Spitfire needs a really good rebuild to it get back on the road. What would be nice is to get the garage extended, for which I have planning permission. The builders need to get onto the drive to do the work, so the Spit has to go on the road, for which it needs an MOT. So, I decided to do a patch job in the interim. Mind you, if this is just a patch job - I'd hate to find out how long a proper rebuild is going to take......

So first, the garage had to be tidied up a bit.....

Until there was space for a car as well as somewhere to put the tools and parts, ....

Once the car was in and lifted onto the stands, the wheel and suspension could be stripped out. The work on the wheel arch started out looking like this.....

....until I cleaned of the remaining underseal, and found that what was going to be a simple patch job just wasn't going to cut the mustard. The back corner of the floor pan, sill closure plate and the outer end of the kick-board box section was missing.

Next job was to chase back to something like solid metal. That took a while. It was at this point I found there wasn't a lot of the floor pan edge or inner sill left, so the seats and carpets had to come out too.....

The sill strengthener panel wasn't looking too good either, so that had to come out as well...

Fortunately, new sill panels are available, and a repair panel for the bottom of the B-Post...

That left the original holes in the wheel arch and kick panel...

So template cardboard cut outs were made, from which the metal could be shaped and joggled into place...

It's a Bank Holiday weekend this weekend, so hopefully there will be some news on how the floor pan is going to be repaired soon...

Looks like some serious welding work is needed there Paul! :o

Still... your garage cleaning services could be in great demand!
